Security / Safety Tips:

  • If in doubt, call 911 first, even if an alarm has been pulled.
  • Stay calm and follow the directions of emergency workers, security, faculty, and staff in all emergency situations.  Approach police with your hands open and up.
  • In an evacuation, try and stay with your class or group.  Know where the nearest exits and your room’s assembly area are located and help any handicapped.
  • Never use an elevator in a fire; stay low to the ground and feel all doors with the back side of your weak hand before opening.
  • For Medical Emergencies do NOT move the person unless in immediate danger (fire, traffic, drowning, etc.)  See medical emergency posters throughout campus.
  • If you see an unknown or suspicious person on campus, do not let them into any locked doors.  DO NOT confront the person or block their ability to exit.  Let security know and be as descriptive at possible (direction, clothing, etc.)
  • Especially at night and off campus; know where you’re going with good directions beforehand; walk purposefully, be aware of your surroundings, travel with another person if possible.  Do not walk of drive distracted.
  • Program the security office’s 24 hour phone number into your phone: 1-631-687-2424. If you are unable to speak please text 1-917-209-3625.
  • Sign up for the RAVE emergency alert texting system in the Registrar’s Office or on the MySJNY Portal.
  • A copy of your current vehicle registration must be submitted to the security office to obtain a new parking permit.  Please read the parking rules, regulations and the expiration date issued with your parking permit and posted outside the security office.
  • Subscribe to AAA or other roadside assistance programs.
